Looking out at the rain lashing down I thought ' Is this going to be worth it...?' As I drove to Lambhill Court Care Home I was still feeling apprehensive. This was the first visit for the Care in the Community project for Islam Awareness Week and we were doing a group visit to the elderly. The volunteers had all gone through training for this but many had never been in a care home and didn’t know what to expect. Renewing my intention (which was to please God by giving my time to these often lonely and undervalued beacons of our society) and trusting in God I stepped into the care home with the other volunteers. Before I knew it I was listening to a gentleman reminiscing about driving his Ford Cortina to Blackpool, dropping off his parents at the beach and going off to play golf (which was his forte). I could see the joy in his face as he recalled fond memories.
I looked around the room. Conversations was flowing and the chatter was getting louder. This certainly was worth it. The elderly patients in the care home greatly appreciated our visit and all the volunteers wanted to take part in further visits. Alhamdulillah! (All Praise is to The Creator).
If you are thinking about doing something for the vulnerable in our community, just go for it! Take that first step, put one foot in front of the other. Give a little and you will gain much yourself.
The Activities Manager emailed me later and said, 'I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all so very much for your consideration, compassion and thoughtfulness in visiting us at Lambhill Court. We will look forward to your next planned visit.'
I am now looking forward to our other visits with less apprehension, confident in the knowledge that these visits are very beneficial for both me and the recipient.
